Calheta

Settled: c. 1480

Established: Calheta was founded in 1483, and on 3 June 1538 it was made a town by the royal decree of King John III

Church: The first chapel which dated back to the early 1500’s was destroyed in a fire in 1639.  The Igreja de Santa Catarina was then constructed.

Earliest Records: Baptisms **1692, Marriages 1631, Deaths 1727

**There are a few fragments of baptisms surviving for Calheta from 1652,1680, 1683, 1690, and 1691

Established: Norte Pequeno broke from the freguesia of Calheta, becoming an independent parish in 1748.

Church: Around 1690 the people of Calheta built a chapel which they dedicated to Saint Lazarus. It was later destroyed in the 1757 earthquake, and the present Igreja de Sao Lazaro was completed in 1761.
