Background
The unpublished manuscripts serve to document the genealogies of many early Azorean families – often tying them to noble or affluent ancestors in mainland Portugal. Such was necessary in order for one to gain social status in the years following the settlement of the islands. They are a particularly important tool for genealogists as many of the original sources on which they were based no longer survive. There are two manuscripts that pertain specifically to São Jorge; one written by Mateus Azevedo, and the other by Jose Avelar. Fenix Angrense will also be of interest to São Jorge researchers, as many of the islands earliest inhabitants came from Terceira.
